Improved patient safety and more efficient use of resources with a real-time monitor in the emergency department
Helse Midt-Norge has implemented a real-time monitor to strengthen communication between ambulance personnel and medical reception teams.
At the emergency department in Orkanger, the use of the real-time monitor has resulted in improved decision-making, better resource utilisation and increased patient safety.

Value
After several years of using the solution, Orkanger has achieved highly positive results, including improved information flow between the ambulance service and medical reception teams. This has enabled faster and better-informed decisions, leading to more efficient use of resources and increased patient safety.
In addition, Orkanger has seen improvements in the utilisation of its personnel and their competencies, as well as more accurate recording of patient information. Reception teams can now assemble the right resources and initiate the necessary treatment faster, from the moment a patient is on their way to the hospital.
Problem
Helse Midt-Norge covers a large geographic area with potentially long ambulance transport distances. Orkdal Hospital is part of St. Olavs Hospital and serves as a local hospital with emergency functions, receiving approximately 10,000 patients per year. With significant distances involved, it can take considerable time for patients to arrive, making it essential that care is effective en route and that the reception team is fully prepared to deliver the correct treatment upon arrival.
The hospital needed to improve resource utilisation and prevent the loss of critical information between prehospital services and the emergency department. Fragmented information transfer created uncertainty around patient status and made it difficult for reception teams to prepare effectively before a patient arrived.

Solution
Bliksund has worked closely with Helse Midt-Norge on Bliksund EWA, a digital ambulance record, since 2019. Through the use of Bliksund EWA, Orkdal Hospital has implemented a real-time monitor in its emergency department to preserve patient safety and improve information flow.
The real-time monitor gives the emergency department a continuous overview of incoming patients, enabling medical personnel to prepare and prioritise handovers and further treatment. The department now has a comprehensive view of all incoming patients, including updated medical information covering triage data, sepsis criteria, infectious diseases and estimated arrival time. Images from the ambulance record are also displayed on the monitor in real time.
LiveView gives us constant access to live data on incoming patients. This enables us to assemble teams and assess needs and requirements in real time. Having up-to-date information at our fingertips is of great value, as it allows us to receive patients with the right resources and initiate the necessary treatment more quickly.
